EDITORS COMMENTS
This evocative photograph captures a moment of respite during the challenging times of the First World War, as the Powell-Cotton family, including Hannah Powell-Cotton in her Commandant's uniform, Major PHG Powell-Cotton, Nanny Mrs Cook, and their children Antoinette, Christopher, and Mary, pose with their beloved donkey, Jenny. The image was taken in 1918, during the operation of the Quex Park VAD Hospital, which the Birchington Detachment of Kent/178 ran from October 15, 1914, to January 31, 1919. Hannah, the wife of Major Percy HG Powell-Cotton, who was the founder of the Powell-Cotton Museum at Quex Park, served as the Commandant of the hospital. In the photograph, baby Christopher sits comfortably in Jenny's basket seat, adding a sense of innocence and joy amidst the hardships of the war. The presence of the donkey, with her gentle expression and the family's affectionate interaction with her, underscores the importance of companionship and connection during trying times.
