EDITORS COMMENTS
This evocative photograph captures the longest serving members of the Birchington Voluntary Aid Detachment (VAD) staff at Quex Park Hospital in 1917. Standing from left to right are Camille Van Dyck, a Belgian man who originally came to the hospital as a patient after suffering shock, and remained there for the duration of the war, working as a hospital orderly; Dr Harry Worthington, the Medical Officer, who was the Birchington General Practitioner; Clara Buss; and Fanny Watson. Seated from left to right are Dora Watson, Hannah Powell-Cotton, and Hilda Stone. The Quex Park VAD Hospital opened on 15 October 1914 and closed on 31 January 1919. Run by Kent/178, the Birchington Detachment, the Commandant was Hannah Powell-Cotton, wife of Major Percy HG Powell-Cotton of Quex Park, founder of the Powell-Cotton Museum. The dedicated team of volunteers played a vital role in caring for the wounded and sick during World War I. Camille Van Dyck's inspiring story of resilience and service is a testament to the selflessness and compassion of the VAD staff during this challenging time.
