EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the majestic interior of Mercers Hall in the City of London, circa 1910. The artist, Sandell Ltd, beautifully captures the grandeur and elegance of this historic building. Mercers Hall has been the home of the prestigious Mercers Company since its construction in the early 16th century. Unfortunately, it fell victim to the devastating Great Fire of London in 1666 but was rebuilt by Edward Jarman and John Oliver in a stunning design that opened its doors once again in May 1676. The hall underwent extensive renovations from 1877 to 1881, ensuring its timeless beauty would continue to inspire all who entered. The photograph reveals a magnificent dining room adorned with exquisite chandeliers hanging from an intricately detailed ceiling. A long table is set with chairs fit for dignitaries while flags proudly wave above them. This image transports us back to a bygone era when trade and commerce flourished within these walls. It serves as a testament to Britain's rich architectural heritage and highlights the importance of guilds such as the Mercers Company in shaping London's history. Thanks to Sir Walter Besant's book "London - The City" we are fortunate enough to have this snapshot frozen in time for future generations to appreciate and admire.
