The Ceramic Gallery, South Kensington Museum, c1876, (1881). Creator: John Watkins
The Ceramic Gallery, South Kensington Museum, c1876, (1881). Interior view of the Ceramics Gallery, a tiled and painted room housing the Museums collection of pottery and porcelain. The gallery, which opened in 1868, was designed in the fashionable revived Italian Renaissance manner. Its floor was covered in Minton tiles, with ten columns covered in shining majolica (painted tin-glazed earthenware). In the foreground is a ceramic solid fuel stove. The ceiling and friezes were painted over after the Second World War, but much of the gallery was restored during the 1990s. From " The South Kensington Museum", a book of engraved illustrations, with descriptions, of the works of art in the collection of the Victoria & Albert Museum in London (formerly known as the South Kensington Museum). [Sampson Low, Marston, Searle and Rivington, London, 1881]

The Ceramic Gallery, South Kensington Museum, c1876
EDITORS COMMENTS
is a captivating print that takes us back to the late 19th century. This interior view of the Ceramics Gallery showcases a beautifully tiled and painted room that housed the museum's extensive collection of pottery and porcelain. Designed in the revived Italian Renaissance style, this gallery opened its doors in 1868 and immediately became an art lover's paradise. The Minton tiles covering the floor exude elegance while ten majestic columns adorned with shining majolica add a touch of grandeur to the space. Intriguingly, a ceramic solid fuel stove catches our attention in the foreground, reminding us of how different times were back then. It serves as a reminder that even amidst artistic beauty, practicality had its place. Although some parts of this gallery suffered damage during World War II when its ceiling and friezes were painted over, restoration efforts took place during the 1990s to bring it back to its former glory. This remarkable image comes from "The South Kensington Museum" an engraved illustration book showcasing works of art from what we now know as the Victoria & Albert Museum in London. With John Watkins' keen eye for detail capturing every aspect of this magnificent space, viewers are transported through time into an era where artistry met functionality within these hallowed walls.
