EDITORS COMMENTS
This hand-colored copperplate engraving depicts a Bonze, or Buddhist monk, performing a vow of extreme mortification in China. The monk, dressed in the traditional robes and carrying a wooden staff, is seen crawling on all fours with a large saddle on his back. The saddle, adorned with intricate designs and a bit in its mouth, adds an unusual element to this already penitential act. The monk's expression is one of deep concentration, as he focuses on the spiritual significance of his vow. The engraving, created by Andrea Freschi after Antoine Cardon, was published in "China, Its Costumes, Arts, Manufactures, etc." by Henri-Leonard-Jean-Baptiste Bertin and Jean Baptiste Joseph Breton in 1824. The rite of crawling on all fours with a saddle is an ancient Buddhist practice, known as the "Penance of the Four Directions." Monks would perform this penance as a way to atone for their sins and to seek enlightenment. The use of a saddle symbolized the monk's willingness to bear the weight of the world and its suffering. The intricate details of the engraving, from the monk's robes to the intricate designs on the saddle, showcase the skill and artistry of the craftsmen of the time. The hand-coloring adds a vibrant and rich quality to the image, making it a beautiful and intriguing glimpse into the past.
