A Lead in the Pack, c1910–1913, (1913)

A Lead in the Pack, c1910– 1913, (1913). The final expedition of British Antarctic explorer Captain Robert Falcon Scott (1868-1912) left London on 1 June 1910 bound for the South Pole. The Terra Nova Expedition, officially the British Antarctic Expedition (1910-1913), included a geologist, a zoologist, a surgeon, a photographer, an engineer, a ski expert, a meteorologist and a physicist among others. Scott wished to continue the scientific work that he had begun when leading the Discovery Expedition to the Antarctic in 1901-04. He also wanted to be the first to reach the geographic South Pole. Scott, accompanied by Dr Edward Wilson, Captain Lawrence Oates, Lieutenant Henry Bowers and Petty Officer Edgar Evans, reached the Pole on 17 January 1912, only to find that the Norwegian expedition under Amundsen had beaten them to their objective by a month. Delayed by blizzards, and running out of supplies, Scott and the remainder of his team died at the end of March. Their bodies and diaries were found eight months later. Photogravure after a drawing by Dr. Edward A. Wilson. From Scotts Last Expedition, Volume I. [Smith, Elder & Co. London, 1913]

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print titled "A Lead in the Pack, c1910–1913" captures a significant moment from the final expedition of British Antarctic explorer Captain Robert Falcon Scott. In 1910, Scott embarked on the Terra Nova Expedition with a diverse team of experts including geologists, zoologists, surgeons, engineers, and photographers. Their mission was twofold: to continue scientific research in Antarctica and to become the first to reach the South Pole. The photograph depicts Scott alongside his companions Dr Edward Wilson, Captain Lawrence Oates, Lieutenant Henry Bowers, and Petty Officer Edgar Evans as they brave treacherous conditions during their journey towards the Pole. The determination etched on their faces is palpable as they navigate through icy terrain and face unpredictable weather patterns. However, upon reaching their destination on 17 January 1912 after enduring countless hardships and setbacks caused by blizzards and dwindling supplies, they were met with heart-wrenching disappointment. The Norwegian expedition led by Amundsen had already triumphed over them by reaching the South Pole a month earlier. Tragically, due to further delays caused by harsh weather conditions and depleting resources during their return journey from the Pole, Scott's entire team perished at the end of March that year. It wasn't until eight months later that their bodies were discovered along with poignant diaries documenting their heroic struggle. This photogravure print based on an original drawing by Dr Edward A. Wilson serves as a powerful testament to both human resilience in extreme environments and the sacrifices made in pursuit of scientific discovery.
