On the Way to the Pole, c1911, (1913). Artist: Edward Wilson
On the Way to the Pole. Some of his companions sketched by Dr. Edward A. Wilson: R.F.S. - Captain Scott. B.H.R.B. - Birdie Bowers. T.O. - Titus Oates. A.C.-G. - Apsley Cherry-Garrard. P.K. - Patrick Keohane. c1911, (1913). The final expedition of British Antarctic explorer Captain Robert Falcon Scott (1868-1912) left London on 1 June 1910 bound for the South Pole. The Terra Nova Expedition, officially the British Antarctic Expedition (1910-1913), included a geologist, a zoologist, a surgeon, a photographer, an engineer, a ski expert, a meteorologist and a physicist among others. Scott wished to continue the scientific work that he had begun when leading the Discovery Expedition to the Antarctic in 1901-04. He also wanted to be the first to reach the geographic South Pole. Scott, accompanied by Dr Edward Wilson, Captain Lawrence Oates, Lieutenant Henry Bowers and Petty Officer Edgar Evans, reached the Pole on 17 January 1912, only to find that the Norwegian expedition under Amundsen had beaten them to their objective by a month. Delayed by blizzards, and running out of supplies, Scott and the remainder of his team died at the end of March. Their bodies and diaries were found eight months later. EDITORS COMMENTS
is a poignant print captured by artist Edward Wilson during the final expedition of British Antarctic explorer Captain Robert Falcon Scott. The image showcases some of Scott's companions sketched by Dr. Edward A. Wilson himself, immortalizing their brave and fateful journey. The Terra Nova Expedition, which took place from 1910 to 1913, aimed to continue scientific research in Antarctica while also striving to be the first team to reach the South Pole. Led by Captain Scott, this diverse group included experts in various fields such as geology, zoology, photography, engineering, skiing, meteorology, and physics. Accompanied by Dr. Edward Wilson along with Captain Lawrence Oates, Lieutenant Henry Bowers, and Petty Officer Edgar Evans; Scott reached the South Pole on January 17th in 1912 but tragically discovered that Norwegian explorer Amundsen had beaten them there a month earlier. Facing blizzards and dwindling supplies on their return journey from the pole; Scott and his remaining team members perished at the end of March. Their bodies were found eight months later alongside their diaries which documented their heroic struggle against nature's harsh elements. This photograph captures a moment frozen in time - a testament to human resilience and determination amidst unforgiving conditions. It serves as a reminder of both triumphs achieved and sacrifices made during one of history's most treacherous expeditions into uncharted territories.
