Map - British Antarctic Expedition 1910-13. Track Chart of Main Southern Journey, 1913
Map - British Antarctic Expedition 1910-13. Track Chart of Main Southern Journey, 1913. The final expedition of British Antarctic explorer Captain Robert Falcon Scott (1868-1912) left London on 1 June 1910 bound for the South Pole. The Terra Nova Expedition, officially the British Antarctic Expedition (1910-1913), included a geologist, a zoologist, a surgeon, a photographer, an engineer, a ski expert, a meteorologist and a physicist among others. Scott wished to continue the scientific work that he had begun when leading the Discovery Expedition to the Antarctic in 1901-04. He also wanted to be the first to reach the geographic South Pole. Scott, accompanied by Dr Edward Wilson, Captain Lawrence Oates, Lieutenant Henry Bowers and Petty Officer Edgar Evans, reached the Pole on 17 January 1912, only to find that the Norwegian expedition under Amundsen had beaten them to their objective by a month. Delayed by blizzards, and running out of supplies, Scott and the remainder of his team died at the end of March. Their bodies and diaries were found eight months later. From Scotts Last Expedition, Volume I. [Smith, Elder & Co. London, 1913]

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the "Map - British Antarctic Expedition 1910-13. Track Chart of Main Southern Journey, 1913". It represents the final expedition led by the renowned British Antarctic explorer, Captain Robert Falcon Scott. Departing from London on 1 June 1910, this ambitious journey aimed to conquer the South Pole and continue vital scientific research. The Terra Nova Expedition comprised a diverse team of experts including geologists, zoologists, surgeons, photographers, engineers, ski experts, meteorologists, and physicists. Their collective goal was to expand upon Scott's previous scientific endeavors during the Discovery Expedition (1901-04) while also striving to be the first to reach the geographic South Pole. Accompanied by Dr Edward Wilson, Captain Lawrence Oates, Lieutenant Henry Bowers and Petty Officer Edgar Evans; Scott successfully reached their long-awaited destination on 17 January 1912. However, their triumph quickly turned into heartbreak as they discovered that Norwegian explorer Amundsen had beaten them to this historic milestone by a month. Tragically delayed by blizzards and plagued by dwindling supplies in harsh conditions; Scott and his remaining team members perished at the end of March. It wasn't until eight months later that their bodies were found alongside poignant diaries documenting their courageous struggle for survival. This extraordinary map serves as a testament to both human resilience and exploration in one of Earth's most unforgiving environments. Preserved from "Scotts Last Expedition". Volume I (Smith Elder & Co. , London - 1913), it stands as an enduring reminder of Captain Scott's indomitable spirit and unwavering pursuit of knowledge amidst nature's harshest challenges.
