EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases H. R. H. The Prince of Wales, captured around 1920 by an unknown creator. The future King Edward VIII, known affectionately as David within the royal family, is depicted in this image. Edward reigned as king from January 20th, 1936 until his abdication on December 11th of the same year. This decision came after he caused a significant constitutional crisis by proposing to Wallis Simpson, a divorced woman deemed unsuitable for the role of queen consort. Despite the controversy surrounding his reign and subsequent abdication, Edward went on to marry Mrs Simpson and they became known as the Duke and Duchess of Windsor. This remarkable photograph was produced by J. Beagles & Co Ltd. , based in London during the early twentieth century. In this portrait, we see a distinguished gentleman dressed impeccably in period attire gracefully doffing his hat with regal charm. His gaze exudes confidence and charisma befitting royalty while capturing a moment frozen in time. The monochrome aesthetic adds depth to this historic image that represents an era long gone but not forgotten. It serves as a testament to both British heritage and the complexities faced by those who hold positions of power within monarchy. As we admire this postcard-like print today, it offers us an intriguing glimpse into the life of Prince Edward before he ascended to become King Edward VIII - forever etching his name into history books for reasons beyond mere royalty or lineage.
