EDITORS COMMENTS
This 19th-century Coca-Cola advertisement print takes us back to the early days of this iconic American beverage. Dating from the 1890s, just a few years after its inception in John Pemberton's pharmacy in Atlanta, Georgia, this advert showcases an original form of Coca-Cola that contained coca leaves and claimed medicinal benefits. Priced at only 5 cents, it highlights the Home Office location in Atlanta with branches in Chicago, Philadelphia, Los Angeles, and Dallas. The artwork features a well-dressed Caucasian woman holding a glass of Coca-Cola while surrounded by vibrant flowers. Her gloved hand delicately grasps the drink as she embodies elegance and sophistication. This illustration represents not only the product itself but also reflects the historical context of medicine and pharmaceuticals during that era. Although modern-day Coca-Cola no longer contains cocoa or coca leaves but instead includes sugar and caffeine, this vintage print reminds us of its humble beginnings. The logo displayed here dates back to 1885 when The Coca-Cola Company was founded. Preserved by the Library of Congress/Science Photo Library, this chromolithograph offers a glimpse into North American history through advertising artistry. It serves as a testament to how far this beloved beverage has come since its early days as a patent medicine.
