Activated macrophage, SEM C015 / 6375
Activated macrophage. Coloured scanning electron micrograph (SEM) of an active macrophage white blood cell. Macrophages are cells of the bodys immune system that are found in the tissues rather than in the circulating blood. They recognise foreign particles, including bacteria, pollen and dust, and phagocytose (engulf) and digest them. In the active state the cell surfaces have numerous cytoplasmic extensions (thread-like), which are used for locomotion within the tissues as the cell seeks out and engulfs the foreign particles. Magnification: x2700, when printed 10 centimetres wide

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the intricate beauty of an activated macrophage, a vital component of our body's immune system. In this colored scanning electron micrograph (SEM), we witness the remarkable structure and function of these white blood cells that play a crucial role in defending our bodies against foreign particles. Macrophages are unique as they reside in tissues rather than circulating within our bloodstream. They possess the extraordinary ability to recognize and engulf various foreign substances such as bacteria, pollen, and dust through a process called phagocytosis. The active state of these macrophages is evident from their cell surfaces adorned with numerous thread-like cytoplasmic extensions. The magnified view at x2700 reveals the intricacies of this single macrophage, highlighting its anatomical features essential for locomotion within tissues while seeking out and devouring any invading particles. This SEM image provides us with a glimpse into the world of cellular defense mechanisms that protect us from harmful pathogens. Photographed by Steve Gschmeissner for Science Photo Library, this print not only captures the scientific essence but also serves as a reminder of the incredible complexity hidden within our own bodies. It symbolizes both resilience and vulnerability – reminding us to appreciate the wonders of biology while acknowledging our ongoing battle against microscopic invaders.
