Bowes Lyon Marriages Vandyk Weddings 1923 Elizabeth
EDITORS COMMENTS
This exquisite portrait captures the Duke of York, later King George VI, on the occasion of his marriage to Lady Elizabeth Bowes-Lyon on 26 April 1923. The Duke, born on December 14, 1895, was the second son of King George V and Queen Mary. His elder brother, Albert, Duke of York, was expected to ascend the throne, but unexpected events led to a significant shift in the monarchy. The Duke met Lady Elizabeth, the eldest daughter of the Earl and Countess of Strathmore and Kinghorne, during a shooting party in 1920. Their engagement was announced in January 1923, and their wedding took place at Westminster Abbey in a grand ceremony attended by thousands. This portrait, skillfully painted by the renowned artist C. Vandyk, commemorates this joyous occasion in the life of the Duke and Duchess of York. The Duke is depicted in his military uniform, a nod to his service in the Royal Navy and the Royal Flying Corps during World War I. The Duchess, wearing a beautiful gown and a tiara, stands beside him, her radiant smile reflecting the happiness of the moment. Tragically, the Duke's elder brother abdicated the throne in December 1936, leading to the Duke's unexpected ascension to the throne as King George VI on 11 December 1936. The Duke and Duchess's marriage proved to be a source of strength and stability during the challenging years that followed, as the United Kingdom faced the trials of World War II. This portrait is a testament to the love and commitment shared by the Duke and Duchess of York on their wedding day, as well as their resilience and dedication to their duties as monarch and consort.
