EDITORS COMMENTS
This striking portrait captures Rudolph Robert Basil Aloysius Augustine Feilding, the 9th Earl of Denbigh and 8th Earl of Desmond (1859-1939). Born in 1859, the eldest son of the 8th Earl of Denbigh, Rudolph Feilding inherited the titles and estates upon the death of his father in 1891. Feilding's military career began in the Grenadier Guards, and he rose to the rank of Major. His service in the British Army was not limited to peacetime, as he saw action in the Second Boer War and was mentioned in dispatches for his bravery. In 1895, Feilding was appointed as a Deputy Lieutenant and Justice of the Peace for County Meath, Ireland. He continued to serve in various military and administrative roles throughout his life, including as a member of the Irish Land Commission and as a Lieutenant-Colonel in the Royal Defence Corps. Feilding's title as the Earl of Denbigh and Earl of Desmond carried with it a rich history and responsibilities, including the management of extensive estates and the maintenance of historic properties. This portrait, taken in the late 19th or early 20th century, shows Feilding in a formal military uniform, reflecting his dual roles as a nobleman and a soldier. The caption accompanying this image reads "H.A.C." which may refer to the Honourable Artillery Company, a British military organization with which Feilding may have been affiliated. The date range of 1859-1939 reflects the lifespan of the Earl of Denbigh, providing context for this intriguing and historic portrait.
