The devil is in the detail

EDITORS COMMENTS
In this photo print, we are transported back to the thrilling 1961 Lightweight TT race, where two legendary riders, Mike Hailwood and Bob McIntyre, were both astride their powerful 250 Honda-4 motorcycles. However, these early four-cylinder machines had a notorious tendency to overheat during intense races like this one. To combat this issue, Mike's ingenious mechanics came up with a clever modification. They skillfully crafted a slot in the bottom of the fairing (visible just beneath the brake cable), allowing better airflow and cooling for the engine. This small detail would prove to be crucial in determining the outcome of this exhilarating race. As they set off on their high-speed journey around the iconic Isle of Man circuit, it was Bob Mac who initially took charge at the front of the pack. But fate had different plans for him as his engine oil began boiling away due to overheating issues. Forced into an untimely retirement from the race, Bob's dreams were shattered. Meanwhile, thanks to that seemingly insignificant modification made by Mike's mechanics – "the devil in detail" – he managed to keep his engine cool enough throughout those grueling laps. With determination and skillful riding prowess, Mike Hailwood emerged victorious from this fierce battle against both competitors and mechanical challenges alike. This extraordinary photograph immortalizes not only their triumph but also serves as a reminder that sometimes victory lies within paying attention to even the smallest details - an invaluable lesson learned on that fateful day
