Photograph: Scrapping of the SS Great Eastern, c1889-1890
Gelatine dry plate glass negative photographs showing the scrapping of the SS Great Eastern in 1889-1890 at Rock Ferry on the River Mersey, by Henry Bath and Son. View of the starboard side of the Great Eastern, partly submerged in water (the tide is in). There are two ropes from the bow of the ship going into the water. The hull is demolished down to roughly the water line (the lower fittings for the anchor are still in place), but the part of the forward most part of the bow is still in place. There is a crane / scaffolding visible in the middle of the hull, where the funnel had previously been, and a ladder is visible leaning against the side. Possible boat visible pulled up towards the stern
