EDITORS COMMENTS
This photograph depicts the SAI KZ-3 OY-DEB, a Danish light utility aircraft manufactured by Skandinavisk Aero Industri A-S (SAI), at London Gatwick Airport in 1949. The KZ III Laerke (Lark), as it was affectionately known, was a high-wing aircraft of mixed construction, featuring a fabric- and plywood-covered welded steel tube structure. This versatile aircraft was used extensively by both the Danish Air Ambulance Service and Danish Air Force. It first took to the skies on September 11, 1944, during Denmark's German occupation. Remarkably, the Germans granted permission for its construction to serve the humanitarian cause of the Danish Air Ambulance Service. The SAI KZ-3 OY-DEB's historic flight came at a time when Denmark was still under foreign rule, making its presence at Gatwick Airport in 1949 a significant milestone in Danish aviation history. This image captures the aircraft's unique design and the spirit of resilience and determination that defined its creation and use.
