EDITORS COMMENTS
This evocative image transports us back in time to the corner of Break-neck Stairs, Green Harbour Court, Old Bailey, where the renowned Irish writer Oliver Goldsmith resided between the years 1758 and 1774. The scene depicts a bustling courtyard, filled with the sights, sounds, and smells of everyday life in 18th century London. Goldsmith, a prolific author and poet, is best known for his works "The Vicar of Wakefield" and "The Deserted Village." During his time at Green Harbour Court, he penned some of his most celebrated pieces, no doubt inspired by the vibrant community surrounding him. In the foreground of the photograph, we see children playing and women washing clothes in tubs, their laughter and chatter mingling with the cacophony of the busy courtyard. The windows of the buildings frame the scene, revealing glimpses of daily life within. Clothes hang to dry on lines strung between the windows, while the narrow, winding stairs of Break-neck Stairs can be seen in the background. The area, known as Green Harbour, was a popular residential area for the Irish community in London during this time. The name "Green Harbour" is believed to have originated from the lush, green gardens that once surrounded the buildings. Despite its picturesque name, living conditions were far from ideal, with cramped quarters, lack of sanitation, and the ever-present threat of disease. This photograph offers a rare glimpse into the history of a place that played a significant role in the life and work of one of Ireland's most celebrated writers. The corner of Break-neck Stairs, Green Harbour Court, Old Bailey, remains a fascinating piece of historical real estate, steeped in the rich tapestry of 18th century London's Irish community.
