EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases an exquisite Empire ormolu-mounted mahogany and parcel gilt lit en alcove, dating back to 1805. Crafted by the renowned Jacob-Desmalter, Francois H. G. , or attributed to him, this magnificent piece stands at an impressive size of 159x178x249 cm. The lit en alcove features front posts adorned with a fully sculpted winged classical figure holding a sceptre on a plinth embellished with applied rosettes. A dense ribbon bound floral garland gracefully joins these elements together on the shaped front rail. The sides and backposts boast lobed parcel-gilt finials, adding an extra touch of elegance. The plinth is mounted with a flower wreath emitting palmettes, anthemia, and leaves – a testament to the impeccable craftsmanship of its creator. It is worth noting that modifications were made in terms of size, possibly by the 10th Duke in 1826-27, along with some consequential replacements to mounts. Originally designed with a cornice which is no longer present. This stunning lit en alcove now resides in a private collection and has been beautifully captured in this print by Bridgeman Images for Fine Art Finder. Its grandeur and intricate details make it an extraordinary example of Empire furniture from the early 19th century – truly deserving admiration from all who appreciate fine artistry and historical significance within home furnishings.
