EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases one of a pair of George III giltwood armchairs, crafted in 1765 by the renowned designer Robert Adam and master cabinetmaker Thomas Chippendale. The exquisite craftsmanship is evident in every detail of these opulent armchairs, measuring 107x75.5x75 cm. The chairs feature padded backrests, arms, and seats upholstered in a luxurious blue floral cut-velvet silk damask fabric. The elegant design includes a shaped rectangular back adorned with foliage-bound reeding and paterae at the angles. A pierced anthemia takes center stage on the scrolled serpentine toprail. Elaborate scrolled foliate supports grace the padded arms, while flowerheads embellish their terminals. The deep seat-rail is intricately carved with a husk border that transforms into scrolling foliage ending in winged sphinxes. Interlaced scrolls and sphinxes adorn the sides of these magnificent chairs. Cabriole legs topped by anthemions suspending ribbon-tied wreaths provide an additional touch of grandeur. Hairy paw feet headed by beaded girdles enclose anti-friction castors for easy movement. These exceptional armchairs bear incised constructional numerals: one chair numbered III on the back of its front-rail with a chalk inscription M. H. , while the other bears number VI. Large screw-holes indicate constructional tightening points throughout. Originally oil-gilt but now water-gilt over thin lacquer with traces of original oil-gilding, this pair exemplifies Georgian elegance at its finest.
