EDITORS COMMENTS
John the Fearless, also known as John I of Burgundy, was a significant figure in European politics during the late Middle Aages. Born in 1371 as Jean de Montferrat, he later became Count of Nevers and Duke of Burgundy in 1404. John earned his nickname 'Fearless' due to his bold and daring actions, particularly during the political turmoil of the late 14th and early 15th centuries. This striking handcoloured lithograph by Leopold Massard is a faithful reproduction of an original portrait of John the Fearless, which can be found in the portfolio "Maisons Etrangeres XI 21" by Roger de Gaignieres. The image captures John's regal presence, with his piercing gaze and stern expression conveying a sense of determination and authority. He is depicted wearing the robes of a duke, adorned with ermine fur and a collar of the Order of the Golden Fleece, which he founded in 1430. John the Fearless played a pivotal role in French and Burgundian history, particularly during the Hundred Years War between England and France. He was a key supporter of Henry IV of England, and his alliance with the English helped to turn the tide of the war in their favor. However, his alliance with the English also made him an enemy of the French monarchy, and he was eventually assassinated in Paris in 1419. Despite his controversial political career, John the Fearless remains an intriguing and important figure in European history. This beautiful lithograph is a testament to his enduring legacy and the artistic skill of the time.
