EDITORS COMMENTS
This photograph, taken on the 12th of December in the year 1910, depicts Tsar Nicholas II of Russia and his Tsarina, Alexandra, engaging in a leisurely pastime at their royal hunting lodge. The image, captured by the official photographer to the Russian court, offers a glimpse into the personal lives of the last ruling Romanov monarchs of Russia. Nicholas II, born on May 6, 1868, assumed the throne in 1894 following the death of his father, Alexander III. Alexandra, born Princess Alix of Hesse and by Rhine, was the Tsarina consort, having married Nicholas in 1894. The couple's shared love for the outdoors and hunting brought them to this serene setting, providing a brief respite from the weighty responsibilities of ruling one of the most powerful empires in the world. The photograph, published in the Illustrated London News on the 7th of January, 1911, under the title "The Russian Tsar and Tsarina at their Shooting Box," showcases the Tsar in a relaxed and approachable manner, contrasting the formal portraits that were more commonly seen in the media at the time. The Tsarina, dressed in a stylish fur coat and hat, stands beside her husband, her expression one of focused determination as she prepares to take her shot. Tragically, this idyllic scene would be short-lived. Just eight years after this photograph was taken, on the 15th of October, 1918, the Romanov dynasty came to an end with the execution of Tsar Nicholas II and his family by the Bolsheviks. This photograph, therefore, serves as a poignant reminder of a bygone era, offering a fleeting glimpse into the lives of the last Tsar and Tsarina of Russia.
