Virgin and Child, c. 1500. Creator: Leonardo da Vinci (Italian, 1452-1519), circle of
Virgin and Child, c. 1500. Madonna and Child appear in half-length, seated against a dark wall. The Childs body is covered in shadow as he looks over his shoulder at his mother. This painting was bought by James Jackson Jarves as a Leonardo. The landscape and features of the figures are similar to Leonardos Madonna of the Rocks, and in typical Leonardesque fashion, the figures heads incline slightly to the left. However, Virgin and Child was later attributed to a member of Leonardos circle named Francesco Napolitano (active 1500) because of its resemblance to his Madonna and Child with St. Sebastian and St. John the Baptist in Zurich, Switzerland. Virgin and Child has not been widely accepted as a work of Napolitano, however, the present artist was certainly a member of Leonardos circle. The Sforzesco Castle, the seat of Milans ruling Sforza family, appears in the background. The castles original Torre del Filarete, visible in this painting, was destroyed by lightning in 1521 and later rebuilt by Francesco Sforza. The destruction of the Torre establishes a date of about 1500 for this painting

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the renowned artwork "Virgin and Child" created around 1500, attributed to Leonardo da Vinci's circle. The half-length figures of Madonna and Child are depicted seated against a dark wall, creating an intimate atmosphere. The child's body is partially concealed in shadow as he gazes over his shoulder at his mother, evoking a sense of curiosity and tenderness. Originally believed to be a work by Leonardo himself, this painting was later attributed to Francesco Napolitano due to its resemblance to his other masterpiece "Madonna and Child with St. Sebastian and St. John the Baptist" in Zurich, Switzerland. Although not widely accepted as Napolitano's creation, it is certain that the artist responsible for this piece was associated with Leonardo's circle. The background features the iconic Sforzesco Castle, which served as the residence of Milan's ruling Sforza family during that era. Notably visible is the original Torre del Filarete of the castle, tragically destroyed by lightning in 1521 but subsequently rebuilt by Francesco Sforza. This print from Heritage Art/Heritage Images offers viewers a glimpse into one of history's most celebrated artistic circles while highlighting both Leonardesque elements and unique attributes specific to this particular artist within their esteemed community.
