EDITORS COMMENTS
This striking photograph captures Queen Victoria in her resplendent uniform as she presided over the historic 1st Victoria Cross Presentation Parade on 14 June 1856. The image, taken in the mid-1850s, showcases the monarch's elegant attire, which was tailored to reflect the grandeur and prestige of the occasion. The Queen's ensemble comprises a long, full skirt made of rich, dark fabric, adorned with intricate patterns and subtle textures. The bodice of her jacket is fitted and features a high neckline, while the sleeves are adorned with voluminous, puffed shoulders and long, white gloves. The jacket itself is adorned with an abundance of buttons, each one meticulously crafted and polished to a high shine. The military influence on the uniform is evident in the jacket's double-breasted design, complete with epaulets and a sash bearing the insignia of the Order of the Bath. The Queen's regal bearing is further accentuated by the grandiose hat, which is topped with an elaborate net veil and adorned with an impressive feather plume. The Victoria Cross, the highest military decoration for valor in the British military, was established by Queen Victoria herself in 1856 to recognize acts of valour by British and colonial forces. The first presentation of this esteemed award took place at Hyde Park, with the Queen bestowing the honors upon the deserving recipients in front of a large and enthusiastic crowd. This photograph offers a unique glimpse into the opulence and grandeur of the Victorian era, as well as the importance placed on military honors and the role of the monarchy in recognizing the bravery and sacrifice of its citizens.
