Leaf from a Psalter and Prayerbook…, c. 1524. Creator: Unknown
Leaf from a Psalter and Prayerbook: Initial E with Ornamental Border Containing a Seated Satyr and a Bird Eating Grapes (recto) and Ornamental Border with Flowers and Squirrel (verso) (2 of 3 Excised Leaves), c. 1524. This leaf represent the charming, intricate decoration found throughout the parent volume, its leaves now dispersed. Virtually every border, recto and verso, was decorated with liquid gold and highlighted with a variety of flowers, fruits, and vegetables-carnations, thistles, roses, violets, peas, melons-as well as cornucopias, satyrs, masks, insects, birds, etc. The decoration is particularly charming because of the little vignettes within the borders. These motifs depict a girl kneading bread, a cook ladling soup, a goose nibbling grapes off a vine, and a satyr with a horn. Such details would have been a sumptuous delight to the original owner. This was a highly personalized volume, apparently written and illuminated in North Germany. The prominent mention of St. Godehard (died 1038), Bishop of Hildesheim in the original manuscript suggests that it was produced in that city

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases a leaf from a Psalter and Prayerbook dating back to around 1524. Created by an unknown artist, this particular leaf is adorned with an initial "E" surrounded by an ornamental border featuring a seated satyr and a bird feasting on grapes on one side, while the other side boasts a beautiful border filled with flowers and a playful squirrel. The intricate decoration found throughout the parent volume is truly enchanting, with virtually every border embellished with liquid gold and adorned with various flora, fruits, vegetables, cornucopias, satyrs, masks, insects, birds, and more. What makes this piece even more charming are the delightful vignettes within the borders - scenes depicting everyday activities like kneading bread or ladling soup. Originally written and illuminated in North Germany during the 16th century, this highly personalized volume was likely created in Hildesheim due to its prominent mention of St. Godehard (died 1038), Bishop of Hildesheim in the original manuscript. The level of detail present in this leaf would have undoubtedly delighted its original owner. Preserved through time as part of Heritage Art/Heritage Images' collection of historical prints and photographs, this image allows us to appreciate both the artistic skill involved in creating such intricate manuscripts as well as providing insight into religious practices during that era.
