EDITORS COMMENTS
King Manuel II of Portugal, dressed in his regal attire, takes aim with a shotgun during a visit to Windsor, Berkshire in 1909. This photograph captures the last King of Portugal engaging in leisurely shooting while visiting his British counterpart, King Edward VII. Manuel II ascended to the throne following the tragic assassinations of his father and elder brother in 1908. However, his reign was short-lived as a republican revolution unfolded in October 1910, leading to the overthrow of the Portuguese monarchy. Forced into exile, Manuel sought refuge in Britain. In this image, we witness a moment frozen in time - an embodiment of power and tradition amidst the picturesque countryside setting. The print showcases not only Manuel's royal status but also highlights the fashion trends of early 20th-century England. The composition exudes both elegance and determination as Manuel aims at an unseen target. His headgear adds an air of authority while emphasizing his role as monarch. The presence of weaponry symbolizes not only recreational pursuits but also hints at the turbulent times that lay ahead for Portugal. This historic print serves as a reminder of a bygone era when kings ruled nations and political landscapes were subject to sudden shifts. Preserved by The Print Collector archives, it allows us to delve into history and appreciate the complex journey undertaken by King Manuel II during these transformative years.
