Fisherboat in Fernando de Noronha
Fernando de Noronha was discovered on 10 August 1503, barely a decade after Columbus first stumbled on the New World, by explorer Amerigo Vespucci. It was colonised by the Dutch, the French and finally the Portuguese, and until 20 years ago was a prison colony for criminals, gypsies and other undesirables, who were put to work building forts, making lime and weaving cloth. Since Darwin visited in 1832, the island has been a Mecca for naturalists and ecologists (it is now a national park). The island has just seven kilometres of surfaced road, the rest being dirt track and pathway, so buggies are the principal form of transport on the island. About 70% of it is protected, and development of any kind is drastically limited in the other 30 per cent. The island may be a wilderness, but its a domesticated, cared-for wilderness

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures the serene beauty of a fisherboat in Fernando de Noronha, an island with a rich history and breathtaking natural landscapes. Discovered by explorer Amerigo Vespucci in 1503, this Atlantic island was colonized by various European powers before becoming a prison colony for undesirables. However, today it stands as a national park and Mecca for naturalists and ecologists. With just seven kilometers of surfaced road, the majority of transportation on the island is done through buggies due to its limited development. Approximately 70% of the island is protected, ensuring its wilderness remains preserved while still being cared for. In this image, we witness the tranquility that envelops Fernando de Noronha as dusk settles over the horizon. The vibrant colors of the sky reflect upon calm waters, creating a picturesque scene that showcases nature's beauty at its finest. The lone fisherman aboard his vessel adds a touch of human presence amidst this untouched paradise.
