The Army and Navy representing the only interview between the Great Commanders
1268369 The Army and Navy representing the only interview between the Great Commanders, Wellington and Nelson!, c.1890 (colour litho) by English School, (19th century); National Army Museum, London; (add.info.: Vice-Admiral Lord Horatio Nelson (29 September 1758 - 21 October 1805) and Major-General Sir Arthur Wellesley, later Field Marshal The Duke of Wellington (1 May 1769 - 14 September 1852), met on 12 September 1805 in the waiting room of the Colonial Office on Downing Street. Both men were waiting to be interviewed by Lord Castlereagh, the Secretary of State for War and the Colonies. Wellesley was an up and coming commander who had just returned from India where he had served with great distinction. Nelson was already a national hero whose greatest triumph (and death) was to come just over a month later at Trafalgar. In this interpretation of their one and only meeting the artist has depicted the Battles of Waterloo (1815) and Trafalgar (1805) on the wall behind both men. These were the two greatest British victories on land and sea of the French Revolutionary and Napoleonic Wars. ); eNational Army Museum; English, out of copyright

The Army and Navy - A Historic Encounter Between Great Commanders
EDITORS COMMENTS
. This print captures a momentous meeting between two legendary figures in British military history - Vice-Admiral Lord Horatio Nelson and Major-General Sir Arthur Wellesley, later known as Field Marshal The Duke of Wellington. Taken around 1890, the image showcases the only interview these esteemed commanders had with each other. The scene unfolds in the waiting room of London's Colonial Office on Downing Street, where both men patiently await their audience with Lord Castlereagh, Secretary of State for War and the Colonies. Nelson, already hailed as a national hero, would soon achieve his greatest triumph at Trafalgar but tragically lose his life. Wellesley, an emerging commander fresh from distinguished service in India, was destined to become one of Britain's most celebrated military leaders. In this vivid interpretation by an anonymous English School artist, we see Nelson and Wellington engaged in conversation while surrounded by depictions of their monumental victories - the Battles of Waterloo (1815) and Trafalgar (1805). These iconic battles symbolize Britain's triumphs over its French adversaries during the Revolutionary and Napoleonic Wars. Preserved within the National Army Museum in London today, this remarkable print serves as a testament to the indomitable spirit and strategic brilliance embodied by these great commanders. It offers us a glimpse into a pivotal moment when two titans met before destiny propelled them towards eternal glory on land and sea.
