EDITORS COMMENTS
In this charming print captured by Arthur Sidey, we are transported back to the year 1979 in Hyde Park, London. Maureen the elephant, a beloved member of Robert Brothers circus, has temporarily taken up residence in the park as part of the Year of the Child celebrations. As she strolls through the park for her daily exercise routine, Maureen's curiosity leads her to pause at Speakers Corner, where she appears captivated by the passionate speeches being delivered. Ever mischievous and full of character, Maureen seizes an opportunity to make a "Trunk Call" - playfully mimicking human behavior with her long and dexterous trunk. It is moments like these that remind us of how intelligent and adaptable elephants can be. However, not all adventures go according to plan. When our playful pachyderm attempts to board a bus for further exploration around London's bustling streets, she is met with an unexpected obstacle. The Conductress deems there isn't enough room for Maureen on board! This comical encounter highlights both the size and uniqueness of our gentle giant friend. Arthur Sidey's photograph captures a delightful moment in time when humans and animals intersected in unexpected ways during a joyous celebration. It serves as a reminder that even amidst busy city life, there is always room for whimsy and laughter when encountering extraordinary creatures like Maureen.
