EDITORS COMMENTS
This exquisite nineteenth century print showcases the Eurasian Shrew, Sorex araneus, a small nocturnal mammal belonging to the order Eulipotamidae and the family Soricidae. The common name "shrew" is applied to several small, insectivorous mammals, with Sorex araneus being the most widespread and common species in the Eurasian region. The Eurasian Shrew is a placental mammal, meaning it develops inside its mother's womb and is nourished by placental tissue. This tiny creature is a member of the Epitheria, a subclass of mammals that includes the majority of modern mammals. The illustration, drawn with remarkable detail, depicts the shrew's elongated snout, small eyes, and bushy tail, all typical features of shrews. The Eurasian Shrew is adapted to its nocturnal lifestyle, with large, sensitive whiskers that help it navigate in the dark. This print, part of a nineteenth century collection, was produced between 1872 and 1912. It is attributed to Dr. Edward Adrian Wilson, a British naturalist, explorer, and author. Dr. Wilson was a prolific collector and contributor to various scientific publications during this period. His work on the natural history of the Arctic and Antarctic regions is particularly noteworthy. The Eurasian Shrew is found in a wide range of habitats, from forests and grasslands to wetlands and mountains, throughout Europe and Asia. Despite its small size, it plays an essential role in controlling insect populations and maintaining ecological balance. This beautiful illustration is a testament to the intricate detail and dedication of naturalists during the nineteenth century, providing us with a glimpse into the natural world of over a century ago.
