EDITORS COMMENTS
This hand-colored copperplate stipple engraving is a stunning representation of various Old World plants, taken from the pages of Jussieu's Dizionario delle Scienze Naturali, or Dictionary of Natural Science, published in Florence, Italy, in 1837. The illustration was drawn and directed by the renowned French botanical illustrator Pierre Jean-Francois Turpin (1775-1840), with engraving by Verico. At the center of the print, a majestic Sycamore tree, Platanus orientalis, stands tall with its distinctive peeling bark. Surrounding it are a Silver Fir, Abies picea, its blue-green needles contrasting against the Sycamore's trunk; Foxgloves, Digitalis purpurea, with their bell-shaped purple flowers; and a Prickly Pear, Opuntia, showcasing its edible fruit and spiny pads. To the left, a cluster of Carduus marianus thistles adds texture and depth to the composition. In the foreground, the intricately detailed Venus Flytrap, Dionaea muscipula, captures the attention with its open, ready-to-trap leaves. The bottom right corner features a Melon Cactus, Cactus melocactus, and a Shooting Star, Dodecatheon incandescent, with its delicate, nodding flowers. In the upper right corner, an Iris, Iris germanica, and an Orris Root, Iris pallida var. rhizoma, are depicted. Turpin's meticulous attention to detail and Verico's masterful engraving techniques bring these plants to life, offering a glimpse into the natural world of the 19th century. This exquisite piece is a testament to the beauty and diversity of the plant kingdom and the artistry of its illustrators.
