EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures a significant moment in the history of pipeline engineering. Taken by A© Historic England Archive, it showcases the pipelaying equipment as it carefully lowers the Brampton pipeline into a trench in Cumbria. The year was 1975 when Laing Pipelines undertook the monumental task of laying this gas pipeline between Longtown near Carlisle and Bishop Auckland to the east. This particular section formed part of the Frigg pipeline, which transported natural gas from the North Sea all the way to Peterhead in Scotland. The headquarters for this ambitious project were established at an old quarry near Brampton, serving as a testament to human ingenuity and determination. The image not only highlights the remarkable machinery involved but also sheds light on civil engineering's vital role in ensuring efficient gas supply across vast distances. As we admire this photograph, let us appreciate both its historical significance and technical brilliance. It serves as a reminder of how infrastructure projects like these have shaped our modern world while showcasing man's ability to conquer challenges through innovation and expertise.
