Prehistoric carved horse, Vogelherd Cave C015 / 6740
Prehistoric carved horse. Prehistoric carving in mammoth ivory of a wild horse. This Stone Age (palaeolithic) artefact (50 millimetres long) is among many found over the years from soil excavated in 1931 from the Vogelherd Cave, Germany. The ivory figurines have been dated to between 30, 000 and 36, 000 years ago, and are thought to have been produced by the Aurignacian culture. These early humans lived in Europe in the Late Stone Age (Upper Palaeolithic), between 45, 000 and 30, 000 years ago. This is thought to be the earliest carving of a horse yet found

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases a remarkable prehistoric carved horse, discovered in the Vogelherd Cave of Germany. Crafted from mammoth ivory, this Stone Age artifact measures 50 millimeters long and is believed to be between 30,000 and 36,000 years old. It is considered one of the earliest carvings of a horse ever found. The intricate details of this ancient sculpture highlight the skill and artistry possessed by the Aurignacian culture, early humans who thrived in Europe during the Late Stone Age. The carving reflects their deep connection with nature and their fascination with equine creatures. Displayed against a striking black background, this photograph captures not only the beauty of this archaeological treasure but also its historical significance. It serves as a testament to our ancestors' ingenuity and creativity during an era when survival was paramount. Preserved within museum walls today, this exquisite piece offers us a glimpse into our distant past—a time when humans relied on stone tools and lived alongside magnificent animals like wild horses. As we admire this work of art, we are reminded of our shared history with these ancient cultures and gain insight into humanity's journey through time. Javier Trueba's expert photography brings out every delicate curve and contour etched into the mammoth ivory sculpture—allowing us to appreciate both its scientific value as an archaeological find and its aesthetic appeal as a masterpiece from our human heritage.
