EDITORS COMMENTS
This evocative postcard captures the historic moment of the signing of the cease-fire treaty during the Russo-Japanese War, at the Shuishiying in Lushunkou District, Dalian, Liaoning Province, China, on 5th January 1905. The treaty was signed between Anatoly Stessel (1848-1915), representing the Russian forces, and Count Nogi Maresuke (1849-1912), representing the Japanese forces. The Shuishiying, depicted in the background, were once the camp sites or office buildings of the naval forces during the later days of the Qing Dynasty in China. The Battle of Lushun, also known as the Port Arthur Campaign, was a significant conflict between Russia and Japan, which began in February 1904 and ended with this treaty. The signing of the treaty marked the end of the war, which resulted in a major victory for Japan and a significant loss for Russia. The image captures the solemnity of the occasion, with both parties coming together to put an end to the hostilities and pave the way for peace. The Shuishiying, with their grand architecture and tranquil surroundings, provide a fitting backdrop to this historic event.
