EDITORS COMMENTS
In this striking photograph, Prince Edward, later known as King Edward VIII and the Duke of Windsor, is seen dressed in full Indian military uniform, likely from around 1925. The Prince, who was the eldest son of King George V and Queen Mary, had a deep connection with India, having served as the Prince of Wales and the Duke of Cornwall and York in the British Raj from 1910 to 1936. The Indian military uniform that Prince Edward wears in this photograph is a testament to his long-standing association with the Indian Army. He had first visited India in 1899, at the age of just 16, and went on to serve as the Commander-in-Chief of the Indian Army from 1921 to 1925. The uniform includes the distinctive turban and decorations, such as the Star of India and the Order of the Indian Empire. Prince Edward's time in India was marked by his popular reception among the Indian people, and he was known for his efforts to promote good relations between the British and Indian populations. However, his reign as King Edward VIII was short-lived, as he abdicated the throne in 1936 to marry Wallis Simpson, an American divorcee. After his abdication, he went into exile and was later created Duke of Windsor. This photograph captures a moment in time when Prince Edward was at the height of his military career in India, and serves as a reminder of his significant role in the country's history. The Indian military uniform that he wears in the photograph is a symbol of his dedication to the Indian Army and his deep connection to India.
