EDITORS COMMENTS
View of the Great Pyramid of Cholula, or Tlachihualtepetl, in Mexico, is an awe-inspiring sight captured in this handcoloured copperplate engraving by Verico, published in Giulio Ferrario's Ancient and Modern Costumes of all the Peoples of the World in 1843. The pyramid, located in the ancient city of Cholula, is one of the most significant archaeological sites in Mexico and a testament to the rich cultural heritage of the Aztecs and other pre-Columbian civilizations. The Great Pyramid of Cholula is the largest pyramid in Mexico and the fourth largest in the world, with a base measuring over 450 meters in diameter and a height of approximately 66 meters. It was built in several stages between 300 AD and 1250 AD, and was dedicated to the god Quetzalcoatl, the feathered serpent deity, who was believed to have created the world in the Aztec mythology. The pyramid was originally covered in earth and vegetation, making it virtually indistinguishable from the surrounding terrain. It was only during the colonial period that the Spanish discovered the structure beneath the earth, and it was later excavated and restored in the late 19th century. This illustration offers a glimpse into the past, transporting us back in time to the ancient civilization that once thrived in this part of America. The intricate details of the pyramid's design, the lush vegetation surrounding it, and the azure sky above, all come together to create a breathtaking image that continues to inspire wonder and awe in viewers to this day.
