EDITORS COMMENTS
This hand-colored copperplate engraving, titled "Hernan Cortez in Mexico," is an intriguing glimpse into the historical encounter between the Spanish explorer Hernan Cortez and the Mayan people in the early 16th century. The scene depicts Cortez's arrival at Tabasco, Mexico, where he is presented with 20 women, including the famous Marina, by the Mayan rulers. The women are dressed in vibrant, exotic costumes, adorned with feathers and jewelry, reflecting the rich cultural diversity of the region. The next scene shows Cortez and his Spanish fleet landing on the shores of Mexico, with Cortez stepping out of a palanquin, carried by his men. The arrival of the Spanish marked the beginning of the end for the Mayan civilization, as depicted in the following scene where Cortez is shown destroying a Mayan temple and idols. The Mayans, known for their advanced civilization and complex religious practices, were deeply disturbed by the Spanish intrusion. The Mayan priests, dressed in traditional attire, are shown performing a human sacrifice in an attempt to appease their gods, Huitzilopochtli and other deities. The Spanish, however, were determined to spread Christianity and conquer the land, leading to a clash of cultures and beliefs. This engraving is taken from "Scenes in America," a children's book published by Rev. Isaac Taylor in London in 1821. The illustrations in the book were intended to provide amusement and instruction to young readers about the New World and its people. The detailed and colorful depiction of this historical event offers a fascinating insight into the encounter between the Old and New Worlds and the complexities of the colonial period.
