EDITORS COMMENTS
This stunning chromolithograph depicts the Dark Cep or Bronze Bolete, Boletus aereus, a highly prized edible mushroom native to Europe. The intricately detailed illustration was created by A. Bessin and beautifully rendered in color by Lassus for Leon Rolland's seminal mycological guide, Atlas des Champignons, published in Paris by Paul Klincksieck in 1910. Boletus aereus is a large, round to irregularly shaped mushroom with a cap that ranges from dark brown to black, often with a greenish or bluish tinge when fresh. The pores on the underside of the cap are a bright orange-brown color, giving the mushroom its common name. This fungus is found in deciduous and coniferous forests, typically growing alone or in small groups, and is most commonly found in late summer and autumn. The Dark Cep or Bronze Bolete is a popular edible mushroom in Europe, and is highly regarded for its rich, earthy flavor and tender texture. However, it is important to note that there are several poisonous look-alikes, and careful identification is necessary before consuming this or any wild mushroom. This beautiful chromolithograph not only showcases the exquisite beauty of the Dark Cep or Bronze Bolete, but also serves as a testament to the rich history of mycology and the dedication of early mycologists like Leon Rolland, who spent their lives documenting and studying the fascinating world of fungi.
