EDITORS COMMENTS
This chromolithograph, titled "Anteater, Pangolin, Armadillo, Sloth, and Platypus," is an exquisite illustration from the Natural History series by Gotthilf Heinrich von Schubert, published in Munich in 1886. The intricately detailed print showcases an impressive assemblage of six distinct and fascinating creatures from the animal kingdom: A (Giant Anteater, Myrmecophaga tridactyla), C (Ground Pangolin, Smutsia temminckii), D (Six-banded Armadillo, Euphractus sexcinctus), E (Pale-throated Sloth, Bradypus tridactylus), and B (Duck-billed Platypus, Ornithorhynchus anatinus). The Giant Anteater, A, is the largest species of anteater, characterized by its long, curved snout and sticky tongue, which it uses to extract ants and termites from their mounds. The Ground Pangolin, C, is a mammal covered in protective keratin scales, and it rolls into a ball when threatened, making it difficult for predators to attack. The Six-banded Armadillo, D, is known for its distinctive bands and is the most widely distributed armadillo species in South America. The Pale-throated Sloth, E, is a slow-moving creature that spends most of its life hanging upside down in trees. The Duck-billed Platypus, B, is a unique mammal native to Australia, which lays eggs and is one of the few venomous mammals. This print not only showcases the diverse and intriguing features of each animal but also provides a glimpse into the natural history of the late 19th century.
