John Burgoyne, 18th century British general, c1880
John Burgoyne, 18th century British general, c1880. Burgoyne was given command of British forces in Canada in 1777. He planned to march on Albany, New York, then on to New York itself. He believed that the Native American populace and large numbers of loyalists would support his campaign and that the American Revolutionary War could be quickly and decisively ended in Britains favour. His campaign, which ended with defeat at the Battle of Saratoga, proved his beliefs to be ill-founded. A print from Cassells History of the United States, by Edmund Ollier, Volume II, Cassell Petter and Galpin, London, c1880

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures the stern countenance of John Burgoyne, an 18th-century British general. Taken around 1880, this portrait showcases Burgoyne's head and shoulders, highlighting his military attire and distinctive hat. Burgoyne is best known for his command of British forces in Canada during the American Revolutionary War. In 1777, he devised a bold plan to march on Albany, New York, with the belief that Native Americans and loyalists would rally behind him. He hoped to swiftly end the war in Britain's favor. However, as history tells us, Burgoyne's expectations were shattered at the Battle of Saratoga. His ill-founded beliefs crumbled under defeat as American forces emerged victorious. This pivotal battle marked a turning point in the war and demonstrated that victory was not easily attainable for Britain. The image comes from Cassells History of the United States by Edmund Ollier, Volume II—a significant historical resource capturing moments from America's struggle for independence. The engraving offers a glimpse into one man's role within this larger conflict—a reminder that even influential figures like General John Burgoyne faced setbacks amidst their ambitions. Preserved through time by The Print Collector collection, this portrait serves as a testament to both individual determination and the complexities of war during America's fight for freedom.
