EDITORS COMMENTS
This powerful image captures the moment of heroism and bravery during the Zeebrugge Raid of 1918, as Petty Officer Reed rescues the severely wounded Lieutenant Alleyn from the deck of the HMS Vindictive. The raid, which took place on April 23, 1918, was a daring attempt by the Royal Navy to block the Belgian port of Ostend, preventing it from being used as a base for German U-boats. Lieutenant Sir John Alleyn, who was in command of the leading ship in the raid, was unable to leave the conning tower due to a severe wound. Petty Officer Reed, displaying immense courage and determination, carried his officer to the side of the ship through a treacherous journey over a metal-strewn deck, all while being subjected to heavy fire from different angles. Despite the danger, Reed was able to reach the side and drop Lieut. Alleyne after shouting to those below. Both men were eventually rescued, but this act of heroism earned Petty Officer Reed the Victoria Cross, the highest military decoration for valor in the face of the enemy. The Zeebrugge Raid was one of the eight actions during World War I that earned the Victoria Cross, and it demonstrated the extraordinary bravery and determination of the British sailors involved. This image serves as a poignant reminder of the sacrifices made by the men and women who served during the Great War.
