Westward the march of empire takes it flight
Westward the march of empire takes it flight. A grand Whig campaign broadside, with text A brief sketch of the principal events in the lives of William Henry Harrison, and John Tyler... written by Benjamin Owen Tyler. The biographies highlight the candidates public careers and (in Harrisons case) military exploits. The text is framed by two Doric columns supporting medallion portraits of Harrison supporters New York Senator Nathaniel P. Tallmadge and Virginia Senator William C. Rives. (See also The Shipwreck, no. 1840-41, for another commentary on this alliance.) Above the two portraits are seated figures of Liberty and Justice respectively. Flanking each is a cornucopia. Spanning the tops of the columns is a fasces, on which rests an eagle holding an olive branch and arrows in his talons, and a banderole inscribed with the title in his mouth. Behind the eagle a large sun rises. The columns and their bases are inscribed with the names of distinguished military figures, in a few cases accompanied by their historic words. On the bases are illustrations of War of 1812 battles Tippecanoe and Lake Erie. Beside each column grows a tall stalk of corn. Inset in the text are portraits of Harrison and Tyler and, below, a view of Harrisons residence at North Bend. Date c1840. Westward the march of empire takes it flight. Westward the March of Empire Takes Its Flight
EDITORS COMMENTS
: A Grand Whig Campaign Broadside from the 1840 Presidential Election This political broadside, titled "Westward the March of Empire Takes Its Flight," dates back to the pivotal year of 1840 and reflects the intense campaigning atmosphere leading up to the presidential election. The broadside, featuring the candidates William Henry Harrison and John Tyler, was written by Benjamin Owen Tyler and published by a yet-to-be-identified company. The design of the broadside is a masterclass in symbolism and visual storytelling. The text is framed by two Doric columns, each supporting medallion portraits of Harrison supporters, New York Senator Nathaniel P. Tallmadge and Virginia Senator William C. Rives. Above the portraits, seated figures of Liberty and Justice respectively, each accompanied by a cornucopia, symbolize the promise of prosperity and freedom under the new administration. The columns and their bases are inscribed with the names of distinguished military figures, including their historic words and illustrations of significant battles from the War of 1812, such as Tippecanoe and Lake Erie. These elements serve to emphasize Harrison's military prowess and his role in expanding the American empire westward. At the bottom of the broadside, insets display portraits of Harrison and Tyler, along with a view of Harrison's residence at North Bend. The sun rising behind an eagle holding an olive branch and arrows in its talons, along with the fasces and the banderole inscribed with the title, further underscore the themes of progress, power, and unity. This grand Whig campaign broadside is a testament to the visual and rhetorical strategies employed during the 1840 presidential election, as well as the broader historical context of American expansionism and the role of political alliances in shaping the nation's future.
