EDITORS COMMENTS
This striking portrait captures the intense gaze and determined expression of Samuel Houston (1793-1863), an American statesman who left an indelible mark on the history of Texas and the United States. Born in Virginia in 1793, Houston's life was marked by a deep commitment to the cause of Native Americans and a fierce dedication to the principles of liberty and self-governance. Houston's early career was marked by his work on behalf of the Cherokee Nation, for whom he served as a military commander and negotiator. In 1832, he famously led the Cherokee resistance against the forced removal of their people from their ancestral lands, earning the nickname "The Indian Fighter." In 1836, Houston's military prowess was put to the test once again, this time against the Mexican army. As commander-in-chief of the Texas army, he led the charge in the Battle of San Jacinto, resulting in a decisive victory for the Texans and the establishment of the Republic of Texas. Houston was subsequently elected as the first president of the new republic. However, Houston's tenure as president was short-lived. In 1839, he was deposed for his pro-Union stance during the growing tensions between Texas and the United States. Despite this setback, Houston continued to serve his state, eventually being elected governor in 1859. This portrait, taken during Houston's later years, captures the wisdom and experience etched on his face, a testament to a life dedicated to the cause of freedom and self-determination for both Native Americans and Texans. Samuel Houston's legacy continues to be celebrated in Texas and American history as a champion of liberty and a defender of the underdog.
