Swallows Cave, Nahant, 1874. Creator: John Douglas Woodward
Swallows Cave, Nahant, 1874. Tourists at the Nahant peninsula, near Boston, Massachusetts, USA. The Swallows Cave...is a long, gloomy cavern, overhung by a dome of irregular strata, heaved together in strange, shelving layers. The cave is eight feet high and seventy long, and derives its name from its having long been occupied by colonies of swallows, which built their nests in its sombre crevices, and flew in and out in fluttering multitudes. But the invasion of their retreat by curiosity-seekers has expelled them thence. The cave may be entered for some distance by a row-boat; and here is a favorite cool haunt in the hot summer days, when the beaches are insufferable. From " Picturesque America; or, The Land We Live In, A Delineation by Pen and Pencil of the Mountains, Rivers, Lakes...with Illustrations on Steel and Wood by Eminent American Artists" Vol. II, edited by William Cullen Bryant. [D. Appleton and Company, New York, 1874]

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures the enchanting Swallows Cave, located in Nahant, near Boston, Massachusetts. Taken in 1874 by the talented photographer John Douglas Woodward, this image showcases a group of tourists exploring the Nahant peninsula and marveling at the natural wonder before them. The Swallows Cave is a mysterious cavern with an eerie ambiance. Its dome-like structure consists of irregular layers that create unique shelving formations. Stretching eight feet high and seventy feet long, this cave was once home to colonies of swallows who built their nests within its somber crevices. The sight of these graceful birds fluttering in and out added to the allure of this hidden gem. However, as curiosity-seekers began invading their retreat, these beautiful creatures were forced to find new homes elsewhere. Despite their absence today, the Swallows Cave remains a popular destination for those seeking respite from scorching summer days when nearby beaches become unbearable. Woodward's photograph offers us a glimpse into history while showcasing nature's breathtaking beauty. This particular print comes from "Picturesque America; or, The Land We Live In" edited by William Cullen Bryant and published by D. Appleton and Company in 1874. It serves as a testament to Woodward's skillful eye for capturing both grand landscapes and intimate moments within them.
