Lobster, fish and cake, menu design, c1950. Creator: Shirley Markham
Lobster, fish and cake, menu design, c1950. Shirley Markham (1931-1999) studied Graphic Design and Illustration at Central School of Art in London from 1950-1952. The writer, artist, poet, and illustrator Mervyn Peake (1911-1968) was one of her tutors, and her style of drawing was also influenced by other British illustrators such as Edward Ardizzone, Quentin Blake and Edward Bawden. Markham spent time in the Dolomite Mountains in Italy, and also visited Rome, sketching classical buildings. After graduating from Central, she worked as a graphic designer, producing book illustrations, cartoons for comics, menus and programmes. She gave up her promising career however when she got married in 1957. Middle-class women at that time were expected to devote their energies to bringing up children and running the home, and despite her obvious talent, she lacked the confidence to return to illustration. Her portfolio remained in the family attic for many years, but now her work is published here for the first time

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases a delightful menu design from the 1950s, featuring an artistic depiction of a lobster, fish, and cake. Created by Shirley Markham, a talented graphic designer and illustrator who studied at the prestigious Central School of Art in London during the early 1950s. Markham's unique style was greatly influenced by renowned British illustrators such as Mervyn Peake, Edward Ardizzone, Quentin Blake, and Edward Bawden. During her time in Italy's Dolomite Mountains and Rome, Markham drew inspiration from classical architecture while sketching beautiful buildings. After completing her studies at Central School of Art, she embarked on an impressive career as a graphic designer. Her work encompassed book illustrations, comic cartoons, menus for restaurants or events, and programs. Sadly though promisingly married in 1957 to conform to societal expectations placed upon middle-class women during that era—focusing primarily on raising children and managing household responsibilities—Markham reluctantly abandoned her flourishing career. Despite possessing undeniable talent within the realm of illustration; however lacked confidence to return to it professionally. For many years following her departure from the industry; Markham's portfolio remained tucked away in the family attic until now when we have been fortunate enough to publish her remarkable artwork for all to appreciate once again. This particular piece is not intended for commercial use but rather serves as a testament to Shirley Markham's exceptional skill and creativity within the field of graphic design and illustration
