Construction of an Elevated Railway: Bridge over the Cours de Vincennes, 1888. Creator
Construction of an Elevated Railway: Bridge over the Cours de Vincennes, 1888. Conceived in 1851, after Napoleon III came to power, the railway encircling Paris was intended to transport merchandise and, eventually, passengers. The railway represented a new convenience, but measures were needed to ensure the safety of other traffic. The numerous railway crossings included in the initial plans turned out to be a source of fatal accidents. To remedy the problem, the platforms and retaining walls were to be raised at the most dangerous spots. The Cours de Vincennes, in the eastern part of Paris, had been one of the deadliest intersections. The work on an elevated railway bridge over this street, which is depicted here, was completed in February 1889. Trouillebert concentrated on portraits until about 1881, when he began to focus on landscapes. He also painted everyday scenes and nudes. He was commissioned by Edme Piot, a public works contractor, to paint this and four related views of the Paris railway construction

EDITORS COMMENTS
This photo print, titled "Construction of an Elevated Railway: Bridge over the Cours de Vincennes, 1888" offers a glimpse into the ambitious project that aimed to revolutionize transportation in Paris during the late 19th century. Conceived in 1851 under Napoleon III's rule, this railway encircled the city and was initially designed for transporting goods but eventually evolved to accommodate passengers as well. However, with progress came challenges. The inclusion of numerous railway crossings in the original plans proved to be perilous, leading to fatal accidents. To address this issue and ensure safety for all, platforms and retaining walls were raised at critical points along the route. The photograph captures one such crucial moment in this grand endeavor – the completion of an elevated railway bridge over Cours de Vincennes in February 1889. This particular intersection had been notorious for its high accident rate before these preventive measures were implemented. The artist behind this remarkable piece is Trouillebert, known primarily for his portraits but later transitioning towards landscapes and everyday scenes. Commissioned by Edme Piot, a public works contractor involved in constructing the Paris railway system, Trouillebert painted not only this striking view but also four other related scenes depicting different stages of construction. Through this print from Heritage Art/Heritage Images collection, we are transported back in time to witness both progress and caution intertwining on Parisian streets as history unfolds before our eyes.
