1867 Bearer Chevignard Duplessis Georges Lechevallier Standard

EDITORS COMMENTS
This stunning 17th century print depicts a standard bearer proudly leading a company of arquebusiers, or pikemen, into battle. The intricately detailed illustration, handcolored by E. Lechevallier-Chevignard and lithographed by A. Didier, L. Flameng, and F. Laguillermie, is an exquisite example of historical costume art from Georges Duplessis' "Costumes historiques des XVIe, XVIIe et XVIIIe siecles" (Historical costumes of the 16th, 17th and 18th centuries), published in Paris in 1867. The standard bearer is dressed in the regal attire befitting his important role in the company. He wears a richly decorated surcoat, adorned with intricate gold and silver embroidery, over a gambeson and a linen shirt. His hose are held up by a belt, and he dons a pair of high, laced-up boots. A fur-trimmed cloak is draped over his shoulders, fastened with a large brooch. In his left hand, he holds the standard, a tall pole topped with a colorful banner bearing the emblem of the company. In his right hand, he grips the hilt of his sword, ready for action. The arquebusiers in the background are also dressed in the uniform of the company, with their distinctive tall hats, padded jackets, and breeches. They carry their arquebuses, the early firearms that gave the company its name, and are prepared for the impending battle. This print offers a fascinating glimpse into the fashion and military history of the 17th century, showcasing the intricate details and craftsmanship of the era's costumes and weaponry.
