1938 Airship Goodyear Lakehurst Lands

EDITORS COMMENTS
In this historic photograph, a US Navy Goodyear K-2 airship gracefully descends towards the tarmac of the US Naval Air Station in Lakehurst, New Jersey, in 1938. The massive airship, with its distinctive rounded shape and elegant lines, casts a long shadow over the station as it prepares to touch down. The crew members on board, dressed in their navy uniforms, can be seen working diligently to guide the airship to a safe landing. The US Navy's Goodyear K-class airships were a series of rigid airships that were used primarily for transporting passengers and cargo between the United States and Europe. This particular airship, the K-2, was the second in the series and was the largest airship in the world at the time of its construction. It was 785 feet long and had a capacity of carrying up to 70 passengers and 12 crew members. The US Naval Air Station in Lakehurst was an important hub for naval aviation in the late 1930s. The station was home to a number of seaplane squadrons and was also the site of the famous Hindenburg disaster in 1937, when the German airship Hindenburg caught fire and was destroyed while attempting to dock at the station. Despite the tragedy, the US Navy continued to use airships for transport and reconnaissance missions. The K-2, which was involved in several successful transatlantic crossings, was an important part of this effort. In this photograph, we see the K-2 making a routine landing at the station, a testament to the advanced technology and skill of the US Navy's airship program in the pre-World War II era.
