It was designed primarily for transporting personnel and cargo over long distances, making it an essential addition to the Navy's fleet during this era. The K-1 was 215 feet long and had a maximum capacity of 11,500 cubic meters of helium. Its two Maybach VL-1 engines, each producing 325 horsepower, gave it a top speed of around 55 miles per hour.
