Two patients and two nurses in the Hospital Mess, Quex Park

Two patients and two nurses in the Hospital Mess, Quex Park. The patient on the right is wearing the hospital uniform of hospital blues - blue serge jacket and trousers. The other seated man may be a Belgian soldier patient as he is wearing a dark shirt or jacket underneath a greatcoat. He also has a very styled moustache. Two VAD nurses are standing alongside the men. Two more patients in hospital blues can be seen in the background. The Quex Park VAD Hospital opened on 15 October 1914 and closed on 31 January 1919. The hospital was run by Kent/178, the Birchington Detachment. The Commandant was Hannah Powell-Cotton (1881-1964), wife of Major Percy HG Powell-Cotton (1866-1940) of Quex Park, founder of the Powell-Cotton Museum. Major Powell-Cotton was the VAD Transport Officer for the Isle of Thanet area, responsible for organising the transport of patients from the stations to the local hospitals. Date: 1915

EDITORS COMMENTS
This evocative photograph captures a moment of respite and camaraderie in the Quex Park Voluntary Aid Detachment (VAD) Hospital Mess during World War I. The image features two patients, one wearing the distinctive hospital blues uniform of a blue serge jacket and trousers, while the other, a Belgian soldier, is dressed in a dark shirt or jacket beneath a greatcoat and sports an impressive styled moustache. Two VAD nurses, in their white uniforms, stand attentively alongside the men, providing care and support. In the background, two more patients in hospital blues can be seen, adding to the bustling scene. The Quex Park VAD Hospital opened on 15 October 1914 and closed on 31 January 1919. It was run by the Kent/178, Birchington Detachment, with Hannah Powell-Cotton serving as Commandant. Her husband, Major Percy HG Powell-Cotton, was the VAD Transport Officer for the Isle of Thanet area, responsible for organising the transport of patients from the stations to the local hospitals. The hospital provided essential care to wounded soldiers and civilians during the war, and this photograph offers a glimpse into the daily life of the patients and the dedicated work of the VAD nurses. The scene is a poignant reminder of the sacrifices and resilience shown by all involved during this challenging time in history.
