EDITORS COMMENTS
In this evocative image from the past, the St Paul's Cathedral Choir School, situated in St Paul's Churchyard in the heart of the City of London, stands proudly before the Great Fire of London consumed it and the old St Paul's Cathedral in 1666. The neoclassical building, with its grand columns and intricate stonework, served as the home for the renowned choir of St Paul's Cathedral, an institution that has been an integral part of the Anglican Church's rich musical heritage for centuries. The choir school, established in the late 15th century, was a place where young choristers were educated and trained in music, often starting their vocal instruction as young as six years old. The boys lived in the school, attending services at the cathedral and singing in the choir under the guidance of the organist and master of the choristers. The image captures the essence of the 17th century, a time of great artistic and architectural innovation in England. The classical architecture of the choir school is a testament to the neoclassical revival that was taking place during this period, with its emphasis on symmetry, proportion, and grandeur. Sadly, the choir school, along with the old St Paul's Cathedral, was destroyed in the devastating fire that swept through the city on September 2, 1666. The fire, which began in a bakery in Pudding Lane, ultimately destroyed over 13,000 houses and 87 parish churches, including St Paul's Cathedral and its choir school. Despite the loss, the spirit of the choir and its musical tradition endured. The choir was relocated to the nearby Westminster Abbey, where it continues to this day as one of the finest and most historic choirs in the world. The image serves as a poignant reminder of the past, a testament to the resilience and enduring power of music and the human spirit.
